Deadliest Catch is a documentary television series that follows the events aboard fishing boats in the Bering Sea during the Alaskan king crab and Opilio crab fishing seasons. Forty-foot waves, 700-pound crab pots, freezing temperatures and your mortality staring you in the face - it's all in a day's work for these modern day prospectors. Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs narrates.First off, I need to point out that episode 4 was called Breaking Point and episode 5 was called Wing and a Prayer. The use of the episode title, Breaking Point, could have had to do with two different boats. The major breaking point I think will come aboard the Cornelia Marie. Co-owners Josh and Jake Harris have lost complete faith in their replacement at Captain due to death of their father, Phil Harris. Captain Derrick has taken them blue crab fishing and hasn't found consistent fishing grounds all season. I think what's making the situation worse though is Captain Derrick's repeated insults toward their father. Captain Derrick told the brothers that their father did a huge disservice to them by not teaching them more and then tells Jake that he's not the only person with a dead father. Really shocking stuff! On the Seabrooke, Josh from Idaho was a fan of the show and decided to give crab fishing a try. He was hired as a green horn and after two hours of fishing he ran up to the cabin and told the Captain that he couldn't handle all the harassment he was receiving from the crew and by the end of episode 5 he completely quits. That is until their hydraulic crane broke, forcing the crew to move crab pots the "old-fashioned way." Good fishing continued and the spirit of the crew soared.
The rookie Captain of the Ramblin' Rose made a terribly costly mistake on the first off-load of the season. They've been fishing for the elusive blue crab and the Captain wisely (based on his estimates) decided to off-load the crab before dead loss occurred. Unfortunately, the Captain's estimates were way off and the boat only took in 13,000 lbs. of crab. That's 1/3 of what was expected.
There was a major verbal altercation on the Northwestern in episode 5. The seeds for it were planted in episode 4 when Captain Sig allowed young Jake Anderson to pick the fishing grounds for a string of 52 pots. The Captain thought enough of the spot to take the chance on it, but after retrieving the third pot of that string it was clear that Jake chose unwisely. Also, at the beginning of episode 5 the power went completely out on the Northwestern which sent the vessel on a collision course with the dock. Edgar Hansen was cool under fire and quickly restored power, but Captain Sig placed a lot of the blame on Jake for not finding the anchor and dropping it before hitting dock. Other more experienced fishermen were also trying to drop anchor, but the fact that Jake wants to run a boat puts a target on his back. Things turned sour after Edgar started picking on Jake and I think Jake must have been feeling guilty and the harassment just set him off. Jake clearly has rage issues and he said some things that are inexcusable. Captain Sig called him into the cabin and explained to him that he needs thicker skin if he ever wants to be a Captain.
Captain Keith of the Wizard expressed that he's never been in such a rut and he's had to move four times in three weeks. He's seen many good luck signs, but can't figure out why their fortunes haven't changed. Captain Keith sends his brother Monty through the entire boat to find out what continues to plague their luck. Engineer Lenny Lekanoff stumbles across the recently obtained guitar handle of Andy Hillstrand of the Time Bandit the night before in a bar altercation between Monty and Andy. The crew takes the guitar handle and throws it into the Bering Sea. On their next string of pots their luck DOES change! They hit big numbers and the crew starts to breathe easier.
The Time Bandit has hit bad fishing all crab season and Mike Fourtner makes a joke about how Captain Johnathan's lack of clear understanding of where good fishing grounds are this season seems like Fred Flintstone driving a car. The Captain's next decision makes the entire crew laugh and scratch their heads. In what is the biggest gamble in Mike Fourtner's 13 year career, Captain Johnathan takes the boat back to the Slime Banks where they started their season with very little crab. The Captain still thinks there are a ton of crabs to be caught near the scallop beds and it appears he's on to something as their first few pots, after a 14 hour soak, bring in promising numbers.
The end of episode 5 takes place aboard the Wizard, as deckhand Lynn Guitard is given the Captain's chair, so the rest of the crew can get much needed sleep. Someone should have told Lynn he wasn't supposed to join them in slumber, because he ends up falling asleep in busy waters and turns off the watch alarm. The watch alarm is the last defense for sleeping wheel watchers and Lynn is shown sleeping after the alarm is turned off. Tomorrow night's episode is called Exit Wounds and promises to be jam packed with crab fishing goodness!
