Tonight, the A&E series The Glades returns for its third season with a brand new episode titled “Close Encounters” (Season 3 Episode 1) and since I had the opportunity to watch an advance copy of the episode, I wanted to share some tidbits of what you can expect. Before I start, I want to confess something first. Last season, I sort of dropped out of watching The Glades. It started with the season 2 premiere episode “Family Matters” where I was irritated by Callie’s annoying waffling and it culminated with “Moonlighting” where I just gave up on the whole Jim and Callie storyline all together as it detracted from the procedural aspect. Needless to say, I was worried that this new episode was going to be more of the same angst ridden debacle that was last season.Thankfully, this episode alleviated some of those fears. While the two are still at it, the whole relationship has been toned way down and the episode focused primarily on the investiagetion, as it should. Yes, they are still doing lovey-dovey-angsty thing but it’s not as annoying as last season. I actually felt that Callie was given very little camera-time this go around but that could just be me.On the procedural side of things, this episode’s mystery was very interesting as I could not figure out who did it all throughout the entire episode which is quite a feat when you watch as many procedurals as I do. The suspects were not super charismatic but they managed to be pretty interesting in the end.Overall, it’s not an explosive season premiere but it’s still worth watching if you are a fan of the classic Jim Longworth storylines. So don’t miss the season premiere of The Glades “Close Encounters” which airs at 9/8C on A&E. In the meantime, you can check out a video promo of the new season below. Warning: the video promo below is SUPER spoilery for the premiere episode so watch at your own risk.Welcome back, devoted fans of The Glades! Ready for another summer of gators, sawgrass and murder victims? I know I’ve been missing my weekly fix of my home state, and in the season three premiere, “Close Encounters,” I could almost smell the swamp gas.

This week’s victim was a very wealthy man with a gorgeous trophy wife and an eccentric belief that he was abducted by aliens. Unfortunately for him, that belief led him to give a lot of money to a phony UFO investigator who turned out to be a con man. Like any good swindler, the UFO guy murdered the poor man when he decided to leave all of his money to the hot wife, then set up the hot wife to make it seem like she’d tried to set him up!

It was a pretty decent twist, I have to admit. And he would have gotten away with it, too, if he hadn’t taken on a partner with nothing but muscle between his ears. Good help really is hard to find.

As for the whole aliens aspect of the episode, I was with them right up until the end. Every strange occurance was explained away with science and fact…and then Jim looked up in the sky and saw a strange pattern of lights which suddenly and extraordinarily scattered amongst the stars. Okay, you can’t have it both ways. You can’t appease the skeptics and the believers at the same time; all it really does is insult the believers and annoy the skeptics. I choose to blame Jim’s vision on the wine he and Callie were drinking.

Yes, he and Callie are still going strong…and going everywhere, I might add. Not even the empty hospital where she once worked is sacred ground when it comes to their ooey, gooey love fest. I guess maybe I’m still a little bitter that chose him over the needs of her child, that she would rather stay in a city where she might never get a job than bear leaving his side. It doesn’t jive with a character who asked him not to help her get another job.

Last week, I complained about how Callie’s decision to stay in Florida to be with Jim had led to a massive sap fest. But this week’s episode of The Glades, “Posideon Adventure,” actually addressed my complaint, as if the writers had some sort of pipeline to my brain. Or maybe they just had a plan all along. Either way, I’m pleased with the outcome. I’m not sure I could have taken more smiles and slow dances. Although I will absolutely take more shots of Matt Passmore coming out of the shower in just a towel.

When a girl in a mermaid costume washed up on the beach, Jim dove into the world of synchronized swimming shows. As a girl who grew up in Florida, I’ve been fascinated by the famous Weeki Watchee mermaids my whole life, so it was nice to see them get a shout-out, even in passing. Whatever helps ticket sales; some things are so cheesy that they’re sacred.

The murder didn’t have as many twists and turns as the one in the season premiere (it was pretty predictable that the girl was murdered over money), but it was a little surprising that the good sister who was murdered turned out to be way worse than her supposedly wild-child little sister. And a love story came out of it. Hurray!

Back on the home front, however, Jim’s newfound happiness with Callie had only one cloud keeping it from being perfect. The girl can’t seem to find a job. Not even the connections she got through Carlos had gotten her past the interview stage, and the bank wouldn’t give her a loan to go to medical school. Jim’s first suggestion, that she take a break from work, didn’t go over so well. She ended up calling Atlanta and asking about the job she turned down. By the time he got around to suggesting that she take it, her mind was already made up.
