George’s random lesson in Mojave history came completely out of left field. One minute he and Ashley were having a perfectly normal convo about her sex life and the next, Secret Life had turned into 3rd period history class. Oh well, we won’t turn down an opportunity to get our education on. Thanks, George! Was the flashback to mini-Amy the scariest thing you’ve ever seen? Look, Secret Life isn’t the first television show to do the whole “father picturing his teenager as a little girl thing” — we’ve just never seen it done so ... creepily. There wasn’t even any lead-in music! Amy was yelling at George per usual, and suddenly there was a random kid staring up at us with a toothless grin. There’s a word for people who see things that aren’t there, George. It’s called delusional.George wants Robbie to help him demolish the kitchen? When George insisted that Robbie help him re-do the kitchen, we kept waiting for Anne to step in like, “Um, get my kid away from that hacksaw,” but no. Nothing. She was too busy tearing up over her counter tops to realize that her baby had been sitting in the middle of a construction zone with no hard hat on all day.Anyway, with Betty showing this new side of hidden wisdom, Leo discovered that his secretary of 25 years was in love with him. That's the way Secret Life works. Just when you're about to rule someone out for whatever reason, the writers throw a wrench into the story and change everyone's opinions.Take Ricky, the eternal bad boy. Now he's the great dad and loving boyfriend who is giving Ben a truth talk.Ben - the most loyal, doting guy on earth - is suddenly ready to up and leave his wife, who just lost their child. It's not an easy situation for Ben or Adrian, but I'd hate to see him split. Then, you see George and Anne, who are divorced, yet she works at his business and he lives in her house. Lines are blurred on this show, but that's what keeps it interesting.Jack moving into Grace's house is just another way to keep them in each other's lives. The poor kid got so excited when Kathleen hypothesized Grace breaking up with Grant. It felt slightly unfair. But it's also unfair that he's with Madison when I don't think he truly loves her.Lesson of the week? Honesty is the best policy. Amy should've told Ricky the truth, especially when he gave her an opening. Betty was honest with Adrian and it seemed like Adrian had a breakthrough. Ben was honest with himself and Leo... well, Leo is getting there. With Adrian still reeling in the aftermath of her daughter’s death, Ben has turned into quite the little villain as Ashley takes a road trip to nowhere, Papa Juergens changes the countertops in the kitchen, Ricky and Amy fight, as usual, over nothing, this time to resolve it with a bedtime romp and Tom chills with his new family.
What impresses is the evolution of Ben’s character, from tragic hero to hateful villain, all while making sense, all without really breaking out of character is, well, its something the show has done which I actually like. Ben does not want to be with Adrian, he’s understandably pissed off, but from his confession to his best friends and his reaction to Ricky’s advice, I’m hoping that the writers will build up on this character development and fulfil the promise that it sort of established in last week’s episode. He’s not the noble guy anymore.
Adrian meanwhile has to contend with her grief, and the show is also getting along well with her character, developing it in such a way that she has not yet gotten grating and, er, Ben’s stepmother (I know, I don’t know any of these peoples’ names. It took me twenty episodes to figure out which one was Ben and which was Ricky, though in that case it was because the actors look identical) provided an actually semi amusing scene.
So yeah, I’m not saying this show is as emotionally gripping as Friday Night Lights, but with the stillborn subplot it rapidly matured, paticularly the acting. I really admire what Brenda Hampton is trying to do, insofar as taking a tired show and breathing some life into by providing some real, serious stakes. Hopefully the vast improvements will continue.Ashley’s on day one of her “educational” trip across the country, and she’s left her renties all alone and broken-hearted. George is even more crushed when he learns that Amy’s moved in with Ricky, so he takes it out on his house by “renovating” it ... with Robbie. Yeah, ‘cause sticking your kid in the middle of a construction zone is always a good idea. Parent fail.
Meanwhile, George checks in with Ash to make sure she’s following his rules of the road, which include gems like no tornado chasing, no peeing in truck stops, and, of course, no sex. Ha, like that’ll happen. So far, Ashley’s trip consists of feeding donkeys and hanging out at gas stations, and since she and Toby have decided to stay off freeways, it looks like they won’t make it to the east coast until next year. It was nice knowing you, girl.
Back at the Juergens house, George warns Amy that her relationship with Ricky won’t work out and they inevitably have one of their fighting matches. And then, Secret Lifers, the unthinkably hilarious/adorable happens: George imagines Amy as a lisping 6-year-old with the cutest smile ever. Commence laughter.
